BABY, YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL

This beautiful baby is a real “cutie” in the eyes of his grandmother! He was born on April 25 to David and Christine Giesbrecht, who named him Tyler David. To celebrate his birth, his grandma Giesbrecht organized a baby gift shower, which was held at the Plum Coulee Seniors Centre last week Thursday the 8th. About 28 or so ladies gladly accepted the invitation for this social evening, to shower the baby and his mom with practical gifts, and to admire and adore the cute little blonde-haired boy. After some entertaining games that had everyone laughing, it was time for the opening of the gifts. The young mom was pleased with the tokens of love and friendship expressed through these gifts. A bountiful table of tasty goodies with coffee to wash it down brought the evening to a close. Little Tyler’s grandparents are David and Judith Giesbrecht of Plum Coulee. And Diedrich and Aganetha Loewen of Winkler. Congratulations to the young parents. May Tyler add much love to your life!

DESTRUCTIVE FLAMES

Destructive flames charred another house on Government Road in Plum Coulee, next door to house #221, which was charred two months ago. Fortunately no one was in the house, but the building is too far gone for habitation.

NEW NEIGHBORS

The residents on Centre St. S will have noticed that there are new neighbors on that block! This fine young couple are John and Helena Klassen, with their 8-month old boy Wilhelm. They moved from Chortitz into our fair town just recently, and are enjoying their new home! Being situated in that part of town, it’s like living at the lake, for their back yard runs into Sunset Beach! Another couple who are making the most of lakeside property are Allen and Tina Funk, who have cleaned up a site on that street, and are building their new home with the backyard also facing Sunset Beach. Both of these families add a lot of coziness to Centre Street S!

MEXICO MISSION-PART 2

To complete last week’s report on the activities of groups and individuals of the Bergthaler church, I want to add this account of the Senior Youth group. Under the leadership of Pastor Rob Penner, and Brent and Amber Thiessen, they traveled to Reynosa by van. The eager teens enjoyed assisting in practical house construction, also entertaining the children of the community. Soccer is the number One game for them, and to receive a real soccer ball, means so much to the kids. Part of the youth group’s presentation included a pantomime drama they had performed for the kids at Reynosa. The drama illustrated how Christ reaches out to the lost. It spoke volumes without words and appropriate actions. Pastor Rob expressed Thanks to the drivers Dave and Brenda Willey, also Brent and Amber Thiessen. The youth and adults involved in this venture agreed that this was a positive and valuable experience for life.

SIGNS OF SPRING

Some of the first signs of spring have appeared a while back. But new signs of this season are the colorful kites flying in the breezes, and school dramas! The grade 3 and 4 classes will be showcasing the musical, “Malice in the Palace” on the 21st and 22nd. It’s a creative dramatization of the story of Queen Esther. On June 4th and 5th, the grade 8 students will perform “Nerdman” a drama that could keep the audience laughing throughout the show! Another sign that spring is well established is the growth of perennials like rhubarb and sorrel, two important ingredients in table treats. I’m going to cut some rhubarb right away! Who’s next?

A CHILD SHALL LEAD THEM

Young children are such endearing characters. The children of the local Bergthaler church Sunday School, endeared themselves to the residents at Eden and at Salem in Winkler, last Sunday morning. Instead of regular classes, it was that special Sunday when they, with their teachers shared a short worship service at the two residences. Their repertoire featured an upper grade student reading about four Bible characters, each reading followed by singing directed by Tanya Siler, and guitar accompaniment by Ron Wiebe. Lay minister Allen Funk spoke words of encouragement from the scriptures and offered the benediction. From Eden Mental Health Centre the bus full of children and teachers moved on to Salem Home for the Aged. Here they were ushered into the chapel to present their program to the residents, who were awaiting this youthful Sunday School group. The program followed the same plan as at Eden, with one variation after the children’s portion was finished. While Allen Funk ministered to the seniors from the scriptures, the kids and teachers shared their songs with the occupants upstairs. Their joyful singing and ready smiles spread cheer to many residents who are unable to get out and about. With their mission of the morning finished, the kids were treated to snacks like Tim Bits, and a time of play at the Jungle Gym park. The soft warm air and bright warm sunshine lent itself well for this entire activity.
